tutorial: Making an icon
A icon-making tutorial for Adobe Photoshop CS2 (but I think it is compatible with 7.0) featuring Sakura and Mokona from Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicles made by Evelyn. Click on the different coloured links to view images. This tutorial is rated (★★☆). We're going from this to this.[ 1 ] I used this image from somewhere.... (If this is your picture please tell me! ^__^;;) that was originally a bit too light but I darkened it a little. Anyway, paste your image on a 100 x 100 canvas and make sure that if you have a background, that it is transparent.
[ 2 ] I was looking for a pinkish icon so I used these textures (below) from Colorfilter.net. Paste your textures on top of your image. I used 4 textures therefore my layer palette would look something like this.

[ 3 ] Bring any one of your textures (in my case, texture 1) to put behind your main image. Your layer palette should look something like this.
[ 4 ] Hide your other textures except for your background. Your image should look somewhat like this.

[ 5 ] One by one, make your first texture visible and play around with the layer style until you find something you like. In my case, I put texture 2 on Hard Light, 58%. I put Texture 3 on Lighten, 100%. I put Texture 4 on Soft Light, 56%. My icon looks like this. Although it looks a bit pale and hard to see in spots, I'll fix it up later in the tutorial.

[ 6 ] If your icon is too pale or bright, use an eraser at about 30% opacity and erase the hard to see bits. I focused on the areas around Mokona's and Sakura's face so my icon looks like this.

[ 7 ] To make it even easier to see, create a new layer and fill it with a darkish colour. Since I'm making a pink icon I used #FF6497. Put that layer on Linear Burn, 25% or whatever suits your icon. Mine looks like this.

[ 8 ] Now to add some text. Find a dark colour (in my case #D44077) and use a scripty but legible font such as 'akaFrivolity'. Write the word 'friends' (Or another word that matches your icon). Place it somewhere where it is not blocking your characters.
Optional: If you have space, go to Edit >> Transform >> Rotate 90 degrees CW. Put it near the border of your icon. Here is my current product.

[ 9 ] If you want to add a border, create a new layer and then select the marquee tool and go to Style >> Fixed Size >> Width: 100px Height: 100px. Click anywhere on your icon and it should be selected. Right-click and select stroke.
Select the options on your stroke palette so it will look like this and then click 'OK'.
[ 10 ] You are done! This is how my icon turned out and I hope yours will look similar.

If you have problems or questions please email blissful-dreams@hotmail.com. I would also love to see how yours turned out so feel free to email your results as an attatchment, comments are also appreciated.
